Loveway, Inc. Therapeutic Riding Programs

Serving Elkhart Public Schools

Daytime classes for Special Education students from local schools participate during the school year. Schools include REACH PreSchool of Goshen, Mary Feeser, Mary Beck, Bristol, Eastwood, Riverview, Woodland, Concord South, Orchard View, Hawthorne, Prairieview, and Roosevelt. Classes typically last from sixty to ninety minutes. LoveWay's program activities help meet the goals of each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Classes may include video instruction, hands on grooming and tacking activities in the barn, therepeutic riding in the arena or sensory experiences on wooded trails.

Enrollment for Therapeutic Riding Classes

Evening and Saturday morning small group classes are held for other individuals wishing to participate in therapeutic horseback riding. Two classes are held each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings, and Saturday mornings. Minimum age for enrollment is four. Participants are grouped according to age and ability levels. To inquire about enrollment for these classes our Program Manager. Enrollment documents available here.

While the student learns basic riding skills, the horse is led by one person and two others walk beside the rider for safety and stability. Some students will eventually ride independently, unaided by side walkers or leaders.

Riding and vaulting students may learn parts of the horse and tack, identify grooming tools and their use, sequencing, and the proper procedure for grooming and tacking. Some students will assist with cleaning stalls and other barn responsibilities.

Vaulting is a technique used to help the students trust the horses and to improve balance, coordination and muscle tone. In vaulting, the student takes many positions on the horse, including, lying down, standing, kneeling and riding backwards.

Kids Summer Camps

Day camps are our programs for children without special needs. They allow a child the opportunity to learn how to ride a horse and have fun at LoveWay.

Children without special needs may be enrolled in Day Camps during summer vacation and winter break. Camps teach English style horseback riding, horse handling, safety, feed, tack, and more.

Each week consists of five days of lessons, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to noon with lunch from noon to 12:30. Cost is $300 per week. Only six children are enrolled each week so each child gets individual attention.

LoveWay, Inc. provides all participants with a sense of responsibility, value and purpose in life, and instills confidence in them as they care for and befriend LoveWay's horses. The experience empowers them to become independent, using the horses' legs as their own for exploration and freedom-an opportunity that, for some, would be otherwise impossible. Loveway is wonderful organization with a caring and knowledgeable staff. My 11 year old son has participated in the therapeutic horseback riding program for four years. The staff makes him feel comfortable and allows him to be used as an example to the newer students. Feeling he excels at something gives a boost to his self esteem he is not able to receive through academics due to his learning disabilities. In addition, riding gives him a sense of calmness and helps to improve his attention, balance, strength, and coordination. Interacting with the staff and horses creates a sense of responsibility, affection, and a love for animals. He hopes he is able to repay Loveway by volunteering as a teenager.

In addition, Brenden is able to see others who suffer from disabilities and does not feel different when he is at Loveway. Realizing others suffer the same or worse than he also creates empathy.

Thanks,
Karen -Brenden's mom
